The GBA includes territory outside Europe, and excludes some territory that is part of the European continent. For example Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. the only sovereign undisputed territory belonging to the European continent while remaining outside the GBA borders, is 4% of Kazakhstan. While Kazakhstan is excluded from GBA, it is still eligible to apply for membership of the GBU. The boundaries of the Grand Broadcasting Area have their origin in the regions served and linked by telegraphy cables in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Grand Broadcasting Area plays a part in the definition of eligibility for active membership in the Grand Broadcasting Union and thus participation in the Grandvision Song Contest. 60 Countries are in the GBA and can join the GBU if they have all criteries.
